To register, contact the UCAL office.

10:00 - 11:30
Family Workshop
For 6-9 year olds and parents/guardians
In this unique family experience, students and parents explore storytelling and creative play with their bodies, voices and imaginations. Using music, movement and simple text, families will develop a better appreciation for performance energy and theatricality, while celebrating the art of collaboration.

12:00 - 2:00
Will's Words
For 10-13 year olds
Utilizing the process of professional actors, students will engage in a series of fast-paced and exciting exercises exploring techniques in storytelling. Emphasis will be placed on understanding Shakespeare's language: what it means, how it relates to our lives today, and how to make the language come to life onstage. Themes from *A Midsummer Night's Dream *will be explored as students create their own original scenes, culminating in a short showing at the end of the workshop.

Both workshops will be held at the UCAL building, 4226 Spruce St., West Philadelphia. For more information or to register, contact the UCAL office.
Midsummer

Press Release

The University City Arts League will collaborate with the Shakespeare in Clark Park theater company to present two dynamic children's workshops on movement and storytelling.

The workshops will provide a perfect complement to a family trip to see the 2010 Shakespeare in Clark Park production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. Both workshops will be held on Saturday, July 31 at the University City Arts League, located at 4226 Spruce Street in West Philadelphia.

Six to nine-year-olds and their families are invited to the Family Workshop from 10:00 to 11:30 am on July 31. Shakespeare in Clark Park actress and creative dramatics teacher Jess Conda will lead families in imaginative storytelling activities. The workshop will allow children and adults to use their voices and movements to create characters and tell stories related to those they will see on the Clark Park stage.

Children between the ages of ten and thirteen can explore Shakespearean acting at the Will's Words workshop from noon to 2:00 pm. There, they will practice the art of storytelling through fast-paced exercises. Additionally, students will use some of "Will's Words" to learn the language of Shakespearean theater.

The cost for each workshop is $20 per family. For information and registration contact the UCAL office.

The free, outdoor production of A Midsummer Night's Dream runs July 28-August 1 at 7:00 pm in Clark Park, located in West Philadelphia at 43rd Street and Baltimore Avenue. Admission is free; bring chairs and blankets. For more information, call 215-462-2115 or visit http://www.shakespeareinclarkpark.org/.
