  • Visit from Linda Goss, Philadelphia's "Official Storyteller"

Acclaimed storyteller Linda Goss, the “Official Storyteller” of the City of Philadelphia, visited the University City Arts League’s Arts Around the World summer camp session on Wednesday, July 28 to share folk stories and play party songs with the campers. She was accompanied by percussionist Ed Stokes, who introduced the students to new percussion instruments. Goss’s “Can’t Tell a Lie, Peach Cobbler Pie!” presentation was part of the two-week African Arts camp session at UCAL, which also included mask-making, African dance, and a visit to the African American Museum in Philadelphia.

Linda Goss’s visit was made possible by the Pennsylvania Humanities Council’s Commonwealth Speakers Program.

  • UCAL Annual Auction

Some 150 people whooped it up at the annual auction of the University City Arts League bidding and buying a wonderful array of goodies. Items included oriental carpets from Woven Treasure, a behind the scenes tour of the Union League where the Emancipation Proclamation resides (plus lunch for four), a week at a country house in Eagles Mere, Pa. as well as beautiful hand-thrown pottery and photographs and prints by local artists. Dinner by Greg Salisbury (former owner of Rx) and now owner of his own catering company, SOOP, was a delight to the eyes and to taste buds alike. Auction committe members outdid themselves and auctioneer Tim Aikens was as buoyant as ever.
