Annual Giving Campaign

You may have already received the Arts League's Annual Giving letter. This letter summarizes the work that we have done this past year and requests your continued support in the upcoming year. It is with your support that we can continue to create and sustain a vibrant vehicle for the arts in West Philadelphia.

If you did not receive your letter, it is reprinted below. If you did not receive your pledge card or need another copy, please contact the UCAL Office or follow these links to an online version that you can print out and send to the UCAL Office:

Dear Friends,

The University City Arts League is on the move!

  • Last year approximately 3,000 students from tots to grandparents took classes ranging from painting to digital photography, fine arts photography, yoga and the Argentine Tango.
  • Some 100 young campers, many with the help of financial aid, attended our summer Earth Camp.
  • We expanded our relationships with neighborhood schools such as Penn Alexander and Lea with daytime and afterschool programming. After-school offerings now include Chinese, Arabic, recycled art, doll making, and a range of new pottery classes.
  • The Arts League has moved into the digital age thanks to a donation of eight computers from Communtech. In the Winter of 2010 we will begin a series of computer-based art classes including digital photography and web design.

And we accomplished this in a time of economic hardship. Costs to run our school, which includes the only clay studio in West Philadelphia and one of a few remaining chemical photography darkrooms, have increased rapidly. Our historic building poses ongoing maintenance challenges, which recently included a $5,000 water main break and a $65,000 roof repair.

Enrollment in our pottery programs continues to climb, and this year we hope to expand our facilities to accommodate new demand. We will continue to enlarge our popular camp program, and have a plan in place to move class registration online.

Your support is critical to us. Tuition covers only about 65 per cent of our costs.

We welcome donations of any size. Individuals donating more than $50 ($75 for families) automatically become members. Benefits include discounts on classes, art supply purchases, and Curio Theater tickets, as well as the right to vote for board members and officers. This year for the first time members can also enjoy a special preview reception at the Arts League’s Holiday Craft Show and Sale.

Best regards,

Noreen Shanfelter,
Board President
