UCAL’s 2016 Exhibition Schedule
(Philadelphia—August, 2015) The Gallery at the University City Arts League (UCAL) announces its exhibition schedule for 2016. The upcoming exhibitions are all the works of Philadelphia-based artists ranging from emerging, mid-career, too established.
Exhibitions include Leroy Johnson’s first solo exhibition since being awarded the PEW in 2014, a survey of the work of Bernice Paul on the occasion of her 99th birthday, and a group show exploring images of food in contemporary painting, drawing and sculpture.
Patrick Maguire: January 15th-February 12th
Philadelphia based painter and installation artist Patrick Maguire creates works emanating from the ether, a place of memories good and bad, choking gases and maybe even a sunset or two. These snapshots from his world of musing will be on display in a habitat created exclusively for the Arts League. A recent graduate of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, this will be Maguire’s first solo exhibition in Philadelphia
Leroy Johnson: February 19th-March 18th
This will mark the first exhibition of Leroy Johnson’s work since he was the recipient of a Pew Fellowship in 2014. Johnson,(b. 1937) is a mixed-media artist whose work takes the form of painting, collage, and assemblage sculpture. A native of Philadelphia, his work is poetic and reflective of his many experiences in the inner city.
Bernice Paul: April 1st-April 29th
Bernice Paul, or “Bubby” as she is affectionately known, is a prolific painter who finds inspiration in the natural beauty of Philadelphia’s nearby rivers and parks. The walls of UCAL will be filled to bursting with a colorful survey of Paul’s life-time of work. The artist, who studied at the Barnes Foundation, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Fleisher Art Memorial, and the Philadelphia College of Art will turn 99 during the run of her exhibition.
Derek Rigby: May 20th-June 17th
Derek Rigby is a mixed-media artist primarily working in large-scale sculptural assemblage and video. His work has ranged from shrink-wrapped boats to explorations of the landscape of middle-class economies through the medium of gelatin. Originally from Utah, Rigby currently resides and works in West Philadelphia. A recent graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, his exhibition at UCAL will mark the first solo exhibition of Rigby’s professional career.
Jacque Liu: September 16th-October 14th
Jacque Liu creates poetic wall sculptures, installations, and assemblages. A Philadelphia resident since 2008, Liu was born in Taipei, Taiwan, raised in St. Louis, spent two in Berlin, Germany, and four years in Detroit. Understanding travel and place plays an important part in Liu’s work.
Food Show (working title): October 21st-November 18th
Just in time for Thanksgiving, gallery committee members Aubrey Levinthal and Adam Lovitz will bring together a group of artists that explore food in contemporary painting, drawing, and sculpture.
The Gallery at UCAL is curated collectively by the gallery committee; Yvonne Lung (Chair), Aubrey Levinthal, Adam Lovitz, Kaitlin Pomerantz, Daphne Hawkins Parker, Ken Beidler, Justin Phillips and Mary Henderson.
